Fatalities and injuries
From 2000 to 2006, 168 pedestrians and 18 bicyclists were killed in the Kansas City region. During the same time period, an additional 3,360 pedestrians and 1,466 bicyclists were injured. (Source: Mid-America Regional Council Safety Planning Program)

Demographic Data

Amount of walking and bicycling

Nationally, 9.5% of trips are made by walking or bicycling.  Specifically, 8.7% walking and 0.8% by bicycling. (Source: National Walking and Bicycling Study).

In the Kansas metro area, the rate of walking and bicycling is less than half the national average, accounting for only 4.3% of all trips made in the region – 3.9% walking and 0.4% bicycling. (Source: Mid-America Regional Council Household Travel Survey – PDF).
